OPD_06: Endnote Training 08/11/18

Endnote notes:

  • Groups - can be set up e.g Chapters
  • Smart Groups - allow specification of particular terms e.g Forensic. The library will then find any text with 'forensic' in it. Any new books/journals etc will be automatically added.
  • 'New Reference' - I can select TV, Book etc
  • Preview shows how the Harvard reference will appear.
  • When the author is part of an institution (corporate author) e.g David Hart University of Dundee, insert a 'comma' at the end of 'Dundee' - so that Endnote doesn't consider UoD as an author
  • Have Endnote open prior to an online search - as Endnote may not automatically launch when trying to import references from a catalogue or reading listed.
  • Endnote online is not as fancy as Endnote but we can access at home. Sync home with UoD desktop.
  • Create keywords for my search - look for synonyms, variant spellings, keywords, all ways to describe subject, combinations - and then search database.
  • Once searching in a database set preferences, to edit the amount of hits, highlight the ones I want and then 'export' > 'Endnote' ....note! The citation is automatically selected. Make sure to ADD the abstract and keywords too.
  • I can attach a PDF to references. If I find a PDF and it is recent, I can import it directly into Endnote. If it has a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) it should not only pull the pdf, but create the information for me. If it doesn't have a DOI see if pdf is on another database e.g scopus, then pull it in from there.
  • Eliminate duplicated references REGULARLY especially after a research binge!! This will avoid the risk of linking to a reference that may inadvertently get deleted further down the line. To delete 'References > Find Duplicates'
  • Working with Word and Endnote. At the top of the word interface Endnote X9 should be visible. Have both Endnote and Word open.... type some text.... e.g This book is great...then go to the Endnote library click on the " symbol and the citation automatically appears in word. To edit > EDIT > OUTPUT STYLE > CITE THEM RIGHT > TEMPLATE then customise - colour of reference etc.
  • Make sure to only have ONE Endnote library.
  • Endnote online is available through Web of Science > Web of Knowledge >Sign In > Synchronise new library.
  • Imported references - Endnote.com for further information. Contact library if any problems
