Transition from Sally's world to David's - Line to negative space

Image
Sketch design - 3D virtual storyboarding the transition between David and Sally's worlds....positive space represented just with line, to David's casting capturing negative space.... Subtle transition using thicker lines from outlines to fill (line to negative space) and using the transition of the orange outlines representing Sally's work to a mist of orange over the negative shapes of commuters. Transition to white, to create a stark contrast between negative and positive shapes.

Negative Space inspiration

Making the transitions between the world of Sally, David and Aaron is not simple. Sally's world is full of line and very much set in a recognisable environment of the London Underground. I am interested in David's perception of negative and positive space being equal partners. In terms of answering the research question.. In what ways can 3D animation, combined with virtual reality, be used to replicate abstract interpretations of blindness and provide a new film language for artists with sight-loss, I've been reviewing examples of negative space drawings, by sighted artists. David's descriptions of navigating and understanding space is more abstract than the other artists, perhaps because he, of the three participants, has no light or shape awareness at all. I am inspired by the way he describes negative and positive spaces as being equal and it reminded me of Escher's drawings. Upon research negative space drawings I found the negative art graphics of Tang Yau Ho

Aaron world - Piccadilly Circus "is dazzling"

Image
Sketches drawn in Quill, to map out Aaron's world. Dialogue starts with Piccadilly Circus being an overload to the senses. Rough outlines of buildings, illuminated by neon. Startling and abstract shapes of neon lights. This concept will be imported into Unity and lit with neon, emissive lights and reflections in rainy puddles. I like the idea of the buildings stopping at the edge of darkness and the camera gliding toward simplicity and a tree...the business will be seen in the background but not overbearing...either in appearance or sound.

Guru's Day 24 Nov 2020

Guru's Day 24 November 2020 at DJCAD. On line teams meeting with three undergraduate students. Very inspiring to discuss projects. The session started with an ice-breaker. 'Using your non-dominant hand, draw what you had for breakfast'. Post a gif or image in the chat, about how you are feeling about the Guru day. TMC_03 (Thesis Monitoring Committee)

TMC 24 Nov 2020 advice and direction: Dr Michael Peter Prof. Maria Fusco ·         Get clarity of the guidelines for word count, for practice-based PhD thesis. Practice/Thesis is approximately 70/30% split. Word count likely to be between 35- 40,000 (rather than the 80,000 that I thought!) ·           Meet with supervisors to discuss the thesis structure; to establish what to write about ·           Decide on what the 'virtual package' (of both the VR experience and the thesis) will be.                        And create a name for it. This will help shape content to be included in the written work ·          Research and discuss possible external examiners. ·          Distil the written text, so that I am on the same page as the examiner ·          Bibliography can also reveal the wider context, practice and literature reviews that I have looked at ·          Transcripts to be appendices ·          Consider the wider readership and write for them ·          State in the text w

Writing retreat

Great PGR writing retreat today. 250 words an hour goal. Managed 1047 from 10:00 - 13:00. Rough workings, not getting hung up on citing exactly, rather putting loose notes in brackets of where to find my references. Writing about verbatim theatre....to be continued....

Soundtrack_v001 and storyboards.

Sound-track linking all three participants together, in a loose storyline. Using backing tracks and sound effects to create mental pictures. Storyboard images created in Quill, with screen captures. Loose lines to represent Sally's capturing the essence of something in line.  Transition to David's world and representing the negative space of a tube tunnel walk way with solid colour, rather than line. https://youtu.be/hesbJjLxwQI

David Bowie, William Burroughs and the Cut-Up method

Image
http://www.openculture.com/2019/05/how-david-bowie-used-william-s-burroughs-cut-up-method-to-write-his-unforgettable-lyrics.html David Bowie's method of cutting up written text, rearranging to create new meaning, keeps springing to mind, during this process of 'cutting' and editing the interviews in Premiere. I'm taking each interview and, whilst keeping the context in tact, I am connecting different sections of the interviews to create a storyline between each three.
