Data Analysis_Critical Reflection – Coding Memo_008 01 May 2020. Sally Interview 20 January 2020 .Phase 2. Generating initial codes

Process and flow of coding ideas:

Continuation of reviewing, listening and amending transcripts. The process of intense listening allows for silences, gestures, laugh, doubt etc to become apparent and inform latent codes. Considered other’s perception of blindness and shared experiences between sighted and non-sighted. Visual perception and problems creating practice. 2D vs 3D. Curiosity adventure and experience despite limitations. Negative experiences due to stereoscopic vision. Being invisible and ‘part of the furniture’; eyes as objects. Negative feelings toward sight loss. Sighted parents not identifying sight-loss problems. Sighted artists and artists with visual impairment sharing experience of visual impairment. Any sight impairment is disturbing. Artwork making sight-loss and the artist visible – but partially obscured. The beginnings of possible desires and collaborations.

Created slides for latent codes and semantic codes.

Initial latent codes considered today:
Creative practice is challenging and challenges perception
Visual impairment  and creative practice is difficult due to stereoscopic vision
Despite limitations of sight-loss there are possibilities for new adventures and experiences in art
There is known familiarity in 2D drawings, but the possibility of creating a 3D drawing and being inside it is exciting.
Eyes that don’t see are objectified as ‘they’; whereas objectification of people with sight-loss as ‘the blind’ is offensive
Less visibility is safe – when visible in live practice it is safer and more comfortable for the subject to be architectural rather than human
Feelings of guilt perhaps, that blindness wasn’t completely black
Sighted medics and parents would not understand the fear of white noise static
Art being a descriptive language to represent sight loss
Confidence of being seen by the public but safe in a 360 panoramic bubble.

Initial semantic codes considered today:
Sighted and non-sighted visually impaired creatives have shared dream experience
Claustrophobic static white noise is disturbing
Sight cannot be taken for granted and is changeable.
Visual aids are required to help quick adjustment
