Thesis structure

Image
https://app.diagrams.net/ Following my TMC and recent supervisory meeting, I've been considering word count and the structure of my thesis. I've reviewed John McGhee's thesis structure https://discovery.dundee.ac.uk/en/studentTheses/visualise-an-exploration-of-an-artists-approach-to-3-d-computer-v and Joanna Choukier's practice-led thesis, as a structural guide.   Using the above online app, I've used flow diagrams to create an initial structure.

360 Equirectangular skybox in Quill

Image
For the beginning of Aaron's world "Piccadilly is dazzling" I am planning a contrast transition. Going from the stark black and white world of negative space, in David's world, with the 'spike' shining gold ribbons out of the darkness, to overload of the visual and auditory senses of Piccadilly Circus. Test shots today using a 360 Equirectangular image, wrapped around a sphere, to create an instant skybox (spherical 360 background). I thought photorealism would work well, but I'm not convinced that the visual transition will be smooth. I think going from line, to negative space, to stylised buildings using a mixture of line and texture will work. Tests below:

Transition from Sally's world to David's - Line to negative space

Image
Sketch design - 3D virtual storyboarding the transition between David and Sally's worlds....positive space represented just with line, to David's casting capturing negative space.... Subtle transition using thicker lines from outlines to fill (line to negative space) and using the transition of the orange outlines representing Sally's work to a mist of orange over the negative shapes of commuters. Transition to white, to create a stark contrast between negative and positive shapes.

Negative Space inspiration

Image
Making the transitions between the world of Sally, David and Aaron is not simple. Sally's world is full of line and very much set in a recognisable environment of the London Underground. I am interested in David's perception of negative and positive space being equal partners. In terms of answering the research question.. In what ways can 3D animation, combined with virtual reality, be used to replicate abstract interpretations of blindness and provide a new film language for artists with sight-loss, I've been reviewing examples of negative space drawings, by sighted artists. David's descriptions of navigating and understanding space is more abstract than the other artists, perhaps because he, of the three participants, has no light or shape awareness at all. I am inspired by the way he describes negative and positive spaces as being equal and it reminded me of Escher's drawings. Upon research negative space drawings I found the negative art graphics of Tang Yau Ho...
